Growing Indoor House Plants

Posted by Thomas Fryd

by Thomas Fryd

You have probably heard how easy it is to grow houseplants or an indoor garden many times. I’m sure you’ve been regaled with how simple it is to do. If you’re afraid you don’t have a green thumb, don’t worry. All the talk you’ve heard about how easy and simple it is was true. You can grow indoor plants easily. You just need to know a few basic things about how to do it right.

Growing houseplants is very easy and requires only that you be interested in doing so and have a willingness to learn about it. Anyone can build birdhouses, fix a flat tire, sew their own clothes, or do just about anything else if they really want to. Houseplants and indoor gardens are no different. Once you learn the basics, you can plunge in and enjoy watching the fruits of your labor bloom.

Even if you live in a basement or in the Arctic Circle, it’s possible to grow indoor plants using some technologies available on the market. Things like hydroponics and UV lights can work wonders with even the most limited spaces when it comes to growing indoor plants or gardens.

The rules for gardening are not hard-and-fast and results will usually vary from person to person, garden to garden. Indoor planting is no different and this is one of the charms of doing it: every plant, every room, and every gardener is different, every time. When you grow a successful plant in your home, you’ll feel a thrill knowing that it did well because of your skill and ability and not because you can read directions and color by numbers.

The choices of plants, configurations, and arrangements are limitless, so this is where your imagination can really shine. It’s all about your personal taste and what you think will look good in your home, plus a little experimentation. There are a few guidelines to follow as far as growing and caring for the plants, however, and we’ll cover that next.

Knowing your plant’s preferences to light, humidity, soil, watering, and so forth is the number one skill to learn in order to successfully grow indoor plants and gardens. When deciding what kinds of plants or seeds to get, these are the factors that need to be considered, along with the intended location of the plant and how much time and energy you’ve got to care for it. Most plants do well in most areas, with a few exceptions for exotics or specialty plants.

Consider the space you want the plant to occupy. What kind of window does it have and which direction does that window face? North- and east-facing windows mean not much light will get to the plant daily, so low-light and perhaps colder weather plants are a good choice here. The opposite is true for south- or west-facing windows. This time, Schefflera arboricola and other varieties of arboricola which prefers higher light is suitable here. Knowing how much light it will get is paramount to choosing the right plant for the situation.

Now consider how humid or dry your home and the room the plant will occupy is. Bathrooms and kitchens tend to be more humid than other rooms in the home, so take that into consideration when looking at plants. Whatever your climate and home’s conditions, though, there will be plenty of plants to choose from.

So have fun and plant an indoor garden or houseplant today!

Basic Interior Design for your Window Treatments

Posted by Sam Bettingon

by Sam Bettingon

If you’ve always wanted to create a unique style in your home, then get to know the basic designs to perk up your windows by creating your own window valance. You don’t need to be an interior designer to get a good grip of the styles that will be presented but a keen observant eye, a sense of style and a love for the art is all you need.

First, you have to know the basic fundamentals in creating your window valance.

Take a look at your window and consider the function of the design by suiting it to your needs without compromising the beauty of the background or even the view from the outside. Once this is all determined, you can now take into account the different types of window valances out there from curtains, to blinds and even to shutters. Again, these are all determined by carefully examining the position of your window with regards to your home and how it will appeal with the rest. A keen sense of your home’s interior design will be of great help as you create the perfect window valance.

There are many styles to choose from and this will set the mood of your home depending on the ambiance that you want to evoke. The following are just examples of the commonly used Window Valances. Balloon Valance, as the name implies it is indeed a type of valence in which you create a balloon like arrangement with your curtain. It is easy, you just have to fold twice the fabric which you’re going to use and then try to tie them up together in increments to create formation that will have an effect of balloon. Once you’ve created this, you can use light fabrics or try using newspaper and tissue to make it look stuffed.

Another style that is commonly seen in theater production design is Swag Valance. This type of window valance gives off a light and airy feeling to the whole design. To create this you’ll be needing the following; brackets to hold the swag, a pin if needed and of course your choice of swag, the best to use is the light weight fabrics. This will create an illusion of flowing and by putting the swag inside the bracket ,this will create sheering pattern. This type of valance works best to houses with wide windows.

Pleated, is a window valance that works best by hiring an experienced seamstress to do the job for you. This type requires careful cutting and keen selection of fabric to use. It is very important to create a steady pleat on the fabric that will create balance and make it stand out. If you decide to use this design to your house then you’ll be requiring a sturdy board and bracket to hang. This window valance looks especiallly good with faux wood blinds.

In the world of interior design, considerable amount of thought is given to the window. The window treatment can give your home that added pizazz or it can create a look of not just right. These procedures can be done by anybody but it is always best if you have the knack in decoration. This will definitely give your design a uniqueness all its own. Every design should be matched with your requirement and how it will blend the theme of the room. The window should be a connection to the outside and into your room and not just another part of the house.

Designing Your Garden

Posted by Kent Higgins

by Kent Higgins

The walkways you install into your landscape can make your garden more accessible, retain its beauty, and ad to the overall design. They are an integral part of your garden’s look and feel. Functionally, walkways offer a path through your garden that allow people to traverse them without disturbing the plants, grass, and other things you’ve set out for them to enjoy. It doesn’t take long for the places where people often tread to start to look trampled and faded if there are no walkways to protect it.

The beauty of walkways comes from the aesthetic mix of both the materials used and the shapes they and the walkway’s path take. Just as color can make them match or clash with the overall ambiance of your garden, their shape can either cut through the design or flow with it beautifully.

There are a variety of materials to make walkways from, each with its own design elements and functional properties. Interlocking concrete blocks and cobble-stone style bricks are the most popular choices. A bed of either heavy sand or small-pebbled gravel is usually laid and then the interlocking bricks are hammered into place using a wooden or rubber mallet. Bricks are laid in a similar fashion, being pressed together and tamped into place to firmly set them. This “floating” foundation allows the ground to heave with frost or moisture without dislocating the pathway.

Walkways are so integral to the design of a well-made garden than they are usually planned right from the beginning sketches and drawings before work even begins. Elements like bordering flowerbeds, concrete or rock edges, or bark strips are common walkway enhancers, defining the path’s edges for the eye.

Well-made walkways will have a slope or “crown” to them (a hump in the middle) that allows water to drain off so that it does not puddle on the walkway. This makes the walkway safer to traverse, cleaner, and keeps puddles from forming for mosquitoes to congregate in. The bricks and stones used are usually well-textured so that they have a good frictional quality to give a good grip when walking on them, minimizing slipping and dangerous falls.

Other common elements that are included in walkways are casual seating areas (benches, platforms, etc.), handrails for bridges or raised areas, or lighting elements for nighttime ambiance, and perhaps a great pool background to enhance the whole area. Other additions such as bird baths, feeders, squirrel hutches, pet-friendly plants, and other additions can make lively animals move in and around the walkway to give great entertainment and life to the gardens around the walkway.

Residential Reverse Osmosis Systems - The Good and the Bad

Posted by Peter Patterson

by Peter Patterson

Marketers of residential reverse osmosis systems have done a great job at selling to many people that their systems are revolutionary equipment for safe drinking water. The truth is that reverse osmosis systems and its benefits are not exactly what people have been expecting.

Residential reverse osmosis systems are revolutionary only because they are the first reverse osmosis systems built for home-use instead of industrial usage. Reverse osmosis has been the primary standard of water treatment in the industrial world for nearly a century. It’s primarily used in order to keep mineral deposits from forming in machines such as boilers.

Reverse Osmosis systems for residential use has only recently begun and is currently being explored. It’s been touted as a water purifying system that is a scaled down version of the filters used at treatment facilities. And the filtering system even at the level at water treatment plants still leave a lot to be desired in terms of water treatment.

And as much as its touted as revolutionary, residential reverse osmosis systems are relatively new but based on an older system. In fact, they have been utilized for water treatment for over a century. They were first introduced in order to slow down waterborne disease mortality and moderately worked well. It wasn’t until chlorine was first introduced in 1908 that the apparatus began to show its effectiveness.

The problem with reverse osmosis is that it was never designed to be primarily as a cleaning apparatus. The porous membrane filters used were primarily for demineralization purposes and were not for the removal of anything smaller or lighter than a water molecule. What that means is there is a chance that microscopic compounds can get into your drinking water. Unfortunately, many owners of residential reverse osmosis systems aren’t finding out until after the fact.

There are many toxic chemicals and bacteria flowing through our drinking water system, and most of them flow through the porous membrane filter along with the water. As does a horde of bacterial agents, that are way too small for even the membrane to capture. The primary worry of owners of residential reverse osmosis systems is that their system is quite helpless to thwart these contaminants.

It would be safe to assume that if the reverse osmosis system at the water treatment facility failed at eliminating these microscopic contaminants, then more than likely there is no chance for residential reverse osmosis systems from stopping them. The reverse osmosis system is really only the first part of what should be a multi-pronged attack in combating today’s modern contaminants.

If many residential reverse osmosis system owners did their research, they would have known that these systems are ineffective. Also, that there are whole house and point-of-use filtering systems that are priced at a fraction of what they paid for a reverse osmosis purifying system.

Residential reverse osmosis system is not the answer for pure, clean drinking water. But by purchasing an inexpensive purifying system that has an activated carbon filter, multi-block filter, a sub-micron filter and an ion exchange unit, this system will eliminate those contaminants and provide safe drinking water for you and your family.

A Wired Residence Security Appliance: How to Choose?

Posted by George Jones

by James Tild

It has been proven time and time again that houses in which a home security device has been installed have far less potential chance of being broken into. Because of this reality clearly the first thing a home owner must do in order to secure his or her home is to install a home security system.

Choosing a Security System

In the world we live in today the range of different home security systems available is considerable so one must spend some time to properly evaluate each system. The following is a series of tips and points I hope will help you with your decision.

First you must take into account your location, what’s the crime rate where you live? How accessible is your home to a burglar? Are there plenty of people around?

Then consider just how important it is to you to have your home protected. For instants, are there old people in your home who can’t protect themselves? Have you got young children left alone in the home or is the home simply left unoccupied for long periods of time?

Once you have answered these questions you would have narrowed down your choices and hopefully you would have an idea by now of which security system you want to install.

The more classical wired security systems

Hard wire security systems are the most popular choice because they are very reliable and easy to use however, doing the home security system wiring can be a challenge for some non technical people.

For most people, trying to deal with home security wiring it probably not a good idea and the services of a professional electrician will be in order, however needless to say if you are an electrician there’s nothing stopping you getting your hands dirty.

It is imperative that home security system wiring be done in such a way that the wires are not visible by the naked eye, failing to do so could leave a window of opportunity open to a competent burglar.

An additional thing to take into consideration is how well protected your wiring is, you must make sure that your wiring will stay dry at all times.

It really isn’t all that difficult to find yourself in a bit of a mess with a wired home security system installation. So seriously consider professional help if you are not used to wiring jobs.
